Seymour Square
★★★★
Seymour Square, one of Blenheim’s Premier Gardens, is nicely nestled in Blenheim’s CBD, a 10-minute walk from her sister garden Pollard Park, displaying formal flower beds which are planted twice a year for both summer and winter display. A deep herbaceous border along the northern boundary contains many plantings of interest to keen gardeners.
Seymour Square is also known as The Garden of Memories, a most appropriate name for the beautifully planted 1 hectare area.
The area was set aside in 1857 to be used as a park. To begin with, cricket and rugby were played on The Square, then, in the early 1900’s development began.
Two striking features of Seymour Square are the clock tower and fountain. Both are war memorials. The clock tower, clad in stone from local river beds, was unveiled in 1927 and remembers those Marlburians killed in World War One.
The fountain was built on the site of a band rotunda and was unveiled in 1953 in memory of those who lost their lives in World War Two.
Strategically placed seats offer visitors to the garden the chance to stop and rest awhile. Seymour Square is a popular lunch spot and meeting place for locals and a well-recognised landmark in the town.
Some fine specimen trees grace these gardens, many planted as commemorative trees to mark significant events for the district and its people.
