Tūpare

★★★★★★

Tūpare is a premier landscaped garden with a stunning Chapman-Taylor designed house in the Arts & Crafts style. In addition to the beautiful hard landscaping, stately plantings of trees create shelter and a magical atmosphere. Leading all the way down to the Waiwhakaiho River, winding paths cut out of the hill-side lead to surprising vistas and intimate garden rooms. The river flat area retains an idyllic pastoral feeling with simple plantings of specimen trees complemented by the movement of the wind and water. Established in 1932 by Russell Matthews and his family it is now owned by the community through the Taranaki Regional Council.

The garden has a rich variety of trees, shrubs and perennials that thrive in the benign Taranaki climate and sheltered environment. Grand coniferous trees such as dawn redwoods, kauri, and giant redwoods set the framework for the garden. They are supported by beautiful deciduous specimens such as the dove trees, tulip trees and liquidambars - the autumn show at Tūpare is very special. Smaller trees, mainly maples and magnolias, are favoured alongside rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas. Complementing these are cottage garden plants and spring bulbs.

There are free barbecues on the River Flat, historical information in the Gardener’s Cottage and free guided tours of the house are kindly hosted by the Friends of Tūpare through spring and summer (see below for details). Tūpare runs a popular programme of public events including music and horticultural workshops. Owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council, the garden is open all day, every day and entry is free.
