Omaka Lodge
★★★★★
Omaka Lodge is 7kms from Taumarunui, along the Forgotten World Highway. The short drive out follows the Whanganui River and is beautifully scenic any time of year.
At the end of a tree-lined driveway, lies Omaka Lodge and its beautiful mature gardens. Well-positioned on the crest of a hill, with magnificent views of Herlihy’s Bluff and Mount Hikurangi, this wonderful garden offers total privacy and seclusion.
The garden consists of several distinct areas, including The Champagne Lawn, The Water Garden, The Wedding Garden, The Dell, The Woodland, and The Secret Garden. All areas have their own unique character.
Many large mature trees surround the Lodge, providing a structural backdrop to the gardens. Numerous varieties of Rhododendron, Camellia, Azalea and Maple abound, and there are many other species, including a rare Fern-Leaved Beech and a gorgeous yellow Gleditsia which sits near a 75-year-old Kalmia.
Filling the garden beds are hundreds of plant species, including Bergenia, Hosta, Euphorbia, Rose, Astelia, Hydrangea, Astrantia, Heuchera and Alstroemeria. Some – including Deutzia, Nandina, Star Jasmine and red Berberis – are clipped into spirals, pillars, balls or clouds.
The wide variety of planting ensures year-round colour and interest in the gardens – Hellebores and Daphne in winter, Bluebells and Daffodils in spring, Jasmine and Lillies in summer, colourful Maples and Liquidambars in autumn.
Omaka Lodge offers accommodation options, and can provide morning/afternoon tea and lunch by arrangement. Open by appointment only, please email or call us to book at Omaka Lodge, a tranquil oasis amidst New Zealand’s Forgotten World.
