Nikau Grove
★★★★★★
Hundreds of Nikau Palms set the South Pacific theme in this moist gully of approximately one and a half acres.
This peaceful, mature, garden incorporates a variety of intimate and larger spaces, with an emphasis on native plants, which link seemlessly into exotic plantings. Lush exotics, including strelitzia, rhododendrons, abutilons and orchids, create interest and colour throughout. A variety of exotic palms have also been added, particularly around the swimming pool area.
Sympathetic and subtle structures are also included. Ancient Pukatea trees with huge buttress roots form a native rain forest canopy along a natural creek.
Increased planting of bird attracting trees and plants throughout the garden, along with continued rat and possum control, has greatly increased the native birdlife. Boardwalks, ponds, a large waterfall and weta motels also feature.
There are many steps on quite steep hillsides. Steep access. Roadside parking only. A golf cart is available on request.
