Highwic
★★★★
Highwic is a green oasis in the heart of Newmarket, Auckland. This heritage home built in 1862 for the Buckland family, is set in beautiful grounds that are free for the public to explore and enjoy.
Visitors can wander the cottage gardens and orchard area, and even enjoy a picnic or a game croquet on the lawn. An Echium Pinana stands above a volcanic outcrop, forming the north-west corner of the property. Trees around the historic house, including Norfolk pines date from the 1860s.
The historic house museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday where visitors can get an insight into the lives of this large Victorian family who were instrumental in the commercial development of the surrounding area, and whose descendants lived in the property through until the 1970s.
Highwic is jointly owned by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, and Auckland Council.
