Eliza's Garden Cottage
★★★★★
Nestled in the vineyard five hundred metres away from her sister garden Welton House, is Eliza’s which, after a decade of carefully thought out restoration, is ready and open for garden visitors. But better still - stay overnight in the award winning three bedroom cottage and enjoy the garden and swimming pool in total privacy.
Meander beneath majestic, mature trees through a large, serene woodland crammed with mature rhododendrons, magnolias and underplantings of lilies, ferns and wheki ponga. A magical jungle of naturalising Himalayan Giant Lily will surprise you in December as you wander under a three-metre-high canopy of enormous, perfumed lily trumpets.
Fringed by rhododendrons the long, graceful lawn invites your eye beyond the stately elm to enjoy the dramatic light changes of the Richmond Ranges.
The simplicity of the 1967 white cottage rests easily amongst a collection of period hybrid tea roses and suitably cottagey perennials. Further afield you can experience an unusual mass planting of San Pedro cacti and the beginnings of a New Zealand heritage citrus library. Many of the trees and shrubs date from Duncan and Davies best bred specimens of the 1960s and 1970s.
