Eden Garden
★★★★★
Built in a disused quarry in the centre of Auckland, Eden Garden sits on the side of Mount Eden, one of the many volcanic remnants within Auckland. Since 1964, years of garden passion has turned an abandoned wilderness into a memorial garden of great beauty and interest. Camellias form one of the main collections and there are many good specimens of hibiscus, bromeliads, conifers and deciduous trees. Varieties of perennial plants including winter roses, hostas, ferns, clivias and heuchera clothe the ground and complement the vireya rhododendrons which offer year-round colour in the garden.
Spring has become one of the most popular times to visit the garden and marvel at the waterfall, spectacular display of tulips, and birds bathing in the man-made stream. Visitors stop for a coffee or lunch at the café, or book in for special occasions such as a High Tea, birthday or seminar in the function rooms. This can be followed by a walk up Hillary Heights to enjoy breath-taking views across Auckland and the Gulf. The summer perennial garden boasts many old-fashioned roses, as well as hollyhocks, day lilies, salvias and delphiniums.
Throughout the gardens many birds can be seen in amongst the native New Zealand trees along with native butterflies in the Butterfly Garden or in the Butterfly Breeding House in Summer. The topography of this garden adds greatly to the appeal of the gardens. Despite some steeper areas there is wheelchair access to the areas near the entrance of the gardens and adjacent sites.
