Thackwood Garden
★★★★★
Thackwood Garden, comprising three acres, was given a new lease of life some 20 years ago. The house is built on a hill with commanding views of Tasman Bay and the garden has been extended down a step bank that has been terraced, planted and leads down to a large pond at the bottom of a flat paddock. Near the house the mood is gentle with an emphasis on fragrance and beauty.
A wide brick path and gabled colonial entrance arbor is bordered with old and modern roses and cottage plantings. Steps lead down to a large lawn on a lower level. Huge boulders brought in from the back of the farm edge the herbaceous border combined with a formal rose garden. Beyond this point the garden becomes a terraced bank with a wide, grassed, curved path edged with a red brick border. There is a 'Monet walk' beneath iron arches covered with white roses that climb from each side. It is lined with box hedges and a large drift of lavender spreads below. Further down, a cherry walk, under-planted with irises and a Teucrium fruticans hedge, encloses citrus trees. The pond is planted with natives, camellias and hydrangeas and a bridge is currently in construction. A new flat area above the house and BBQ area is enclosed with hedging. An old macrocarpa stump is bordered with climbing roses and a hornbeam hedge surrounds this.
