Hlomo Hlomo (Private)

Hlomo Hlomo is a Zulu phrase, meaning "I stuck my spear in the ground and claim it as mine." The development of this garden started when the family home was built in 2002, evolving from the bare paddock it was then.

The Red Garden is the first stop in a tour of the garden. Flowers and foliage of various shades of red, surround the formal hedges that form the centrepiece of this area. From there a number of shady paths will lead visitors past hostas and ferns, across boardwalks and timber walkways to explore the native bush that forms the backbone of Hlomo Hlomo.

The deck between the two ponds is an ideal spot to rest the legs, before wandering up to “The Terraces”, a formal area with layered hedging surrounding the house. The Potager features creative plantings of vegetables and flowers, and leads to the back of the property, where a Labyrinth provides interest to a huge lawn area. From here a grassy path winds past the lily pond to the “Autumn arboretum”, planted in 2015 to celebrate the stunning autumn colours.

It might take a few years to reach its full potential, but provides plenty of excitement with new leaves announcing spring and the autumn display increasing each year. Hlomo Hlomo is a sprawling garden, with many other areas, artwork and surprises to discover along the way.
