Dalkeith (Private)

Established in approximately 1955 by the Simpsons, who were descendants of early settlers in the district, Dalkeith is a 4 acre garden sited at 437 Boundary Road. It is full of mature rhododendrons, magnolias, maples, camellias and other exotic and native trees. When we moved here in 2007, our objective was to rejuvenate the old established garden and this goal has been largely achieved by clearing and replanting. As a result, the garden is a tranquil oasis of sunshine, birdsong and peacefulness, blended with our own creative gardening style.

As you enter the property the left side of the driveway has been rejuvenated and is now bordered by a photinia hedge and planted in a cottage garden style filled with roses, irises, salvias, peonies and bulbs. Following some ground clearance and tree removal, the right side of the drive now offers a profusion of wild flowers through summer into early autumn. We have planted and named over 100 rhododendrons, as well as naming many existing ones. To help cope with the many dry areas and large numbers of roots, succulents have been introduced to the garden, both in pots and directly into the soil.  As a result of this work the garden now features high, medium and low vistas as well as long and short ones.

The garden’s peak flowering period is October/November but there is always year-round interest as the garden changes with the seasons.

Our garden is available for wedding ceremonies and photos. We also have a small selection of plants for sale. Morning or afternoon tea is available on request (pre booking required).
