Dunedin Botanic Garden

★★★★★★

The Botanic Garden is a garden of great variety with the Leith Stream on the southern boundary and Lindsay Creek running through the middle dividing the garden in two. From the formal, almost level area of the lower garden with its herbaceous borders, rose garden, camellia collection, herb garden and the beautifully planted Lister Garden, to the major collection of plants in the rock garden on the slopes leading to the upper garden, there are features for all to enjoy.

The character changes on the upper slopes of the garden to one of a more informal nature where there are pockets of regenerating bush and an extensive collection of rhododendrons containing about 3500 specimens and a woodland garden with large groups of Meconopsis, Primula, Astilbe, Hosta and Iris.

The native plant collection is found in the upper garden too with many rare and endangered specie. The mature trees of the arboretum lead to the aviary and geographical borders which include a southern African garden and Mediterranean terrace. garden. Full advantage is taken of the topography and the range of microclimates across the 33 hectare site to grow and display a wide range of plants.

Dunedin Botanic Garden provides a valuable source of information and a special place for rest and enjoyment. An information centre and shop along with a café cater for visitors’ needs.
